Voice prioritization must be configured on all upstream devices
Voice packets pass through many Switches and routers. Each hop along the way may affect the quality of your calls. VoIP calls require low latency connections to run smoothly. Even a single congested link in the network chain can create a traffic bottleneck, resulting in overall high latency and poor call quality, as illustrated in the graphic below. This means that all upstream devices starting from your VoIP phone need to be configured for voice prioritization.
How to configure voice prioritization
Router and third party network switches
VoIP traffic can be prioritized using VLAN tags and / or DSCP. We recommend to set up both DSCP and VLAN whenever possible for maximum compatibility between upstream devices. Log into your router and network switches, if any. Then perform these steps:
1. Under VLAN settings, create a rule that ensures Voice VLAN tagged traffic is handled as high priority traffic. Be sure to configure the same Voice VLAN across all upstream devices.
2. Configure the DSCP and Class of Service with the same values across all devices.
A Voice VLAN is a regular VLAN that has been assigned to carry voice traffic.

The configured DSCP and CoS values have to be identical in all upstream devices (from VoIP phone to router) for voice prioritization to work.
